This is the first story in this comic book series that is
not based on an episode of the original Star Trek
The story opens in a bar in the Delta Quadrant with Quocch
(previously seen assisting Nero's crew
escaping from Rura Penthe in
Against the Romulan") selling the specifications of the
Narada (stolen from the Klingon files on Rura
Penthe), to a group of men who seem to be Romulans (who
later turn out to be Vulcans). But, at this point in the
timeline, the major players of the Alpha Quadrant are not
known to have any accessible method of travelling to the far
off Delta Quadrant of the galaxy. Yet, we see not only Quocch and Romulans, but also some Andorians in this bar. In
the original timeline, the Federation had no regular means
to the Delta Quadrant until well over a century after the
time of this story (in the ST-Voyager novel
Page 7 suggests that all Vulcan ships are supposed to be
among one of three colony fleets, by edict of the Vulcan
ruling council. Presumably, these fleets are seeking one or
more new worlds for the surviving Vulcans to colonize since
the destruction of planet Vulcan in
"The Vengeance of Nero".
On page 9, the Vulcans on the besieged science ship refer to
the Vulcan Empire. As far as I know, this is the first that
Vulcan territory has ever been referred to as an empire
outside of fan-fiction settings.
The "Romulan" who is stunned by Kirk on page 11 is revealed
"Vulcan's Vengeance" Part 2 to be named Tarek.
Lt. Boma, who last appeared in
"The Galileo Seven" Part 2, returns in this
A Vulcan named Serron from the science vessel tells Kirk and
Spock that he and his crew were sent to the Vulcan system to
recover any fragments of the homeworld left, finding very
little. Among what they did find were microscopic particles
of the red matter used by Nero to destroy the planet.
Page 20 reveals that the Vulcan Council has forbidden any
ship to enter the void of space where Vulcan once existed.
Serron's science vessel was given special dispensation to
enter and gather as many fragments as possible.
